About 200 years ago, the Lake District was a mountain massif broken by river valleys radiating outwards of the centre. A period of climatic oscillations led to a series of ice ages during which the ice flowed out from the central core, following the river valleys, deepening and widening them, and depositing streamlined till and other depositional features on the lower land.

Roches moutonnées are asymmetric bedrock bumps or hills with a gently sloping and abraded upglacier (stoss) face and a quarried (or plucked) downglacier (lee) face that is typically blunter 1,2. The roche moutonnée associated with glacial rocks of the Itararé Subgroup, near Salto, central-eastern State of São Paulo, is the only example of this kind of glacial abrasion feature known in the late Paleozoic of the Paraná Basin.Though only partially preserved, the structure still displays the characteristic shape and glacial abrasion features typical of Recent and Pleistocene 2021-04-15 · Crag and tail tends to be larger than a roche moutonnée. Crag and tail is the opposite of the roche moutonnée as the ice hits the steep resistant rock outcrop first. Once the glacier slid off the other side of the roche moutonnee, pieces of the bedrock were plucked from the rock by the glacier where they remained frozen into the ice. A jagged wall is left opposite the gentle slope as seen in the following image.
